Electromechanical universal testing machines (UTMs) are used to see how a material or finished part reacts when it is pulled, compressed, bent, sheared, peeled, or torn. Before the material testing starts, it's necessary to secure the specimen in a suitable grip or fixture and set the crosshead speed required by the test method. Once testing begins, the crosshead moves at a controlled speed to pull, compress, or bend the specimen. Throughout the test, the load cell records the applied force, while an extensometer can measure how much the specimen changes in length. By changing the grips or fixtures, the same testing frame can also perform shear, peel, and tear tests on metals, plastics, rubber, composites, and finished parts. The measurements help determine the material’s mechanical properties and check whether a product meets its design or quality requirements.
