Instrumented drop towers, or falling weight impact testers, are used when more than a simple pass/fail result is required. The guided weight drops from a set height, so the striker hits the specified point on the specimen. When the impact occurs, the dynamic load sensor measures the force during the blow, and the fiber-optic sensor records the speed of the striker. The high-speed data acquisition unit sends these readings to the test software, which uses them to calculate peak force and absorbed energy and generate a force-time curve. The force, speed, and energy readings show how the specimen responded to the impact and help determine whether it deformed, cracked, or broke.
